Birnbeck Pier Designer Eugenius Birch drew up the plans for the
pier and the brothers Richard and John Layboume directors of The
Weston-super-Mare Pier Company approved these. The
foundation stone for our present pier was laid on 28 October 1864
and the bridge linking Birnbeck Island to the mainland was
completed in 1866. To the peeling of church bells and cannon
salute the pier was opened on June 15 1867 by eight-year-old Cecil
Hugh Smyth Piggott the son of the Lord of the Manor who had been
invited to perform the ceremony.
