The remaining vestiges of the 1870-1903 North Jetty

The original 1870-1903 North Jetty was primarily constructed of timber. It survived until 10 September 1903, when it was practically destroyed by a major storm which became known as the 'Great Gale'. The lower parts of the supporting trestle posts were not removed when the replacement jetty was built in 1904/5 due to the fact that this was not necessary, being as the new steel trestles were located in different positions. The old trestle leg posts were simply sawn through at a level just above the four iron 'shoes' of each, which themselves were mortised into the bedrock beneath the jetty. These artifacts are now of considerable historic interest. It is believed that seven of them still remain in their original locations.
